Q Fever

Q Fever is an illness spread from animals or animal products. The illness manifests as high fevers, headaches, tiredness, generalised body pains. It can resemble a flu but can cause some serious complications such as damage to heart valve, liver etc. It is caused by a bacteria called Coxiella burnetti. You can find more information about Q fever here.

Q Fever Vaccine

Q fever, vaccination is recommended for anyone who intends to work with animals or animal products such as  workers at farms, zoo, abattoire, meat factory etc.  Family Medicine Umina Beach is an approved centre for Q Fever vaccination. The steps in administration of Q Fever in Family Medicine Umina Beach are as follows

Step 1 - Determine whether you need Q fever vaccination

Q Fever vaccination is not needed and SHOULD NOT BE ADMINISTERED to you, if you have previously had Q Fever vaccination or have contracted the Q Fever disease (or exposed to Q Fever without contracting the illness in certain circumstances). If previously vaccinated, please produce a report from the vaccinator to your employer. If previously contracted a lab confirmed Q Fever provide your employer with the report of the blood test from the laboratory or hospital. As part of the Q Fever vaccination, we have to determine if you need to/ can receive Q fever vaccine.

Step 2 - Contact reception and pop in if possible.

At your initial contact, you would need to fill in our new patient registration forms if you are a new patient to our practice. You need to pay for the cost of the Q Fever skin test so we can order it for you.(Check our fees page for the uptodate cost).  We will then provide you with a request for a Q Fever immunity checking blood test (Serology). This determines whether you need the Q Fever vaccination or not. The receptionist would offer you an appointment for the initial consultation (usually atleast 3 business days from this visit, so we can have the skin test ready for you). This visit does not incur any cost as you will not be seeing the doctor. To speed up the process, you may pay for the Q Fever vaccine at this point for us to order. However please do remember the payment for the skin test and vaccine are non refundable as we wont be able to return the unused vaccines to the retailer.

Step 3 - Initial Consultation

You will be consulting the doctor, who will get to know of your health status, go through the result of the blood test and (if the blood test proves you do not have immunity) administer the Q Fever skin test. The skin test is administered to your non dominant forearm in a needle. The site of the needle may be marked with a permanent marker. This consultation would be charged to the equivalent of our "Long Consultation". A medicare rebate may not be available, however you may be able to claim the fee in your tax return as a work related expense. Please see the fees section for the current fees. To speed up the process, you may pay for the Q Fever vaccine at this point for us to order. However please do remember the payment for the vaccine is non refundable as we wont be able to return the unused vaccines to the retailer.

Step 4 - Second Consultation

This would be booked for the same time as the initial consultation for the following week as the skin test needs to be interpreted on the 7th day. Provided the blood test AND the skin test are NEGATIVE, indicating you have no immunity for Q Fever, the Q Fever vaccine can be administered at this visit, if previously ordered. If not, the vaccine can be ordered at this visit. If you have been administered the Q Fever vaccine, we can issue you with a vaccination certificate. Please have it safe as you may need to provide it to new employers if changing jobs. We may also be able to upload your information to the Q Fever register if you prefer. This consultation would be charged at our "Standard Consultation" fee. A medicare rebate may not be available, however you may be able to claim the fee in your tax return as a work related expense. Please check our fees section for current fees.

Step 5 - Third Consultation (If needed)

If you did not receive the Q Fever vaccine at the second consultation, then you would be administered the vaccine at this visit. This may be about 3 business days after the second consultation. You may see the nurse at this visit. We can issue you with a vaccination certificate. Please have it safe as you may need to provide it to new employers if changing jobs. We may also be able to upload your information to the Q Fever register if you prefer. We will not charge you a fee if you get the vaccine administered by our practice nurse and do not get to see the doctor. If you are to see the doctor a fee may apply depending on the circumstance.
